Insurance Institute of Highway Safety Rolls out Safest Cars for 2010
The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has just announced its annual top picks for the safest car for 2010. California car accident lawyers have not been too surprised by the names of list, nor by the fact that no Toyota vehicles made it to the list. However, automakers Subaru and Volkswagen as well as much battered Ford, have their models featured on the list.

Every year, the automobile industry, auto safety experts and California personal injury lawyers wait for the IIHS ratings. This year's list was released on Wednesday morning. The Insurance Institute picked 27 models for 2010, which is much less the 90-plus models selected last year. The Insurance Institute has included new eligibility criteria relating to roof strength standards of cars. Earlier this year, the NHTSA announced that it was making its roof strength standards stricter, and consequently, the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety also added roof strength requirements to its safety pick eligibility criteria.

This ensured that fewer vehicles were able to make the list this year, because it would now be harder for cars to find coveted spots on the list. The Institute said it will now consider roof crush and collapse testing, and only cars that made it though testing, would find a spot on the list.

The IIHS picks safe cars in five different categories-large, midsize and small cars, midsize and small SUVs. The following are the top 10 safest cars for 2010, according to the IIHS.

In the large car category:

Buick Lacrosse
Ford Taurus
Volvo S-80 (In related news, last month Volvo announced that it was in the process of developing a car that no person would be injured or killed in. The ambitious standards set by the automaker had greatly encouraged California personal injury lawyers, who would like to see more automakers set high standards for the safety and design of their vehicles).
Lincoln MKS
In the midsize car category, the winners were

Audi A-3
Chevrolet Malibu (built after Odctober 2009)
Chrysler Sebring Four door
Dodge Avenger
Subaru Legacy
Subaru Outback
Mercedes C class
Volkswagen Jetta sedan
Volkswagen Passat sedan
Volvo C30
In the small car category, the winners are

Honda Civic 4-door models (except Si)
Kia Soul
Nissan Cube
Subaru Impreza except WRX
Volkswagen Golf 4-door
In the midsize car category, the winners are
Dodge Journey
Subaru Tribeca
Volvo XC6o
Volvo XC9o
In the small SUV category, the picks are

Honda Element
Jeep Patriot
Subaru Forester
Volkswagen Tiguan
Toyota Motor Corporation failed to land a spot on the list, and the automaker has already expressed its displeasure at this rejection.

The Toyota Camry almost made the list, but failed to impress in the rear impact test. A representative for the company called the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety's list "extreme" and "misleading."

The insurance Institute tests about 50 to 55 vehicles every year. Tests are conducted at the request of automakers that pay for the test vehicle..
